Ethnographic Work
  • Aasáx is a dormant language of Tanzania, and belongs to the Afro-Asiatic language family. No remaining member of the ethnic community now uses it as a first language, nor is it taught in schools.
  • Dormancy marks the point at which a community retains its name, its memory, its lineage, yet no longer retains the system through which these were constituted. What is lost is not a vocabulary, but kinship, land, belonging, and so forth. These are not replaceable.
