Abstract
A dispute is an inevitable human phenomenon as much as people co-exist. This is why every ethnic group and culture devised local means and mechanisms to settle such conflicts. This paper analyses fifteen (15) Fulfulde proverbs developed purposely as conflict resolution mechanisms in the Ful6e community. The proverbs were generated from the researcher’s intuition, as a native speaker, and other secondary sources. J. L. Austin’s Speech Act theory will be employed in determining the effects of this linguistic mechanism in bringing about peace and harmony in a Ful6e community. The paper will be delimited to the Ful6e in the Yola community of Nigeria. In conclusion, the paper is expected to explore proverbs as an effective device in resolving various types of conflicts among the Ful6e communities of Nigeria.
