BANISHING WORDS

Every year, a lnumber of words is banished from languages, either informally, that is, in the restriction of their use, or formally, as in the removal of these words from lexical sets and dictionaries. For example, Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, releases its annual set of words that have been banished from use. while some of these are already banished, others are intended to be banished as a request for removal. The univiersity begins with nomications from around the world, words which are then discussed.

Yet, in 2021, the university spent much of its resource focusing on on COVID-19 words, and other words connected to the global pandemic.

in addition to full words, the list also contains phrases, contractions, and other forms of language. The group formed in the mid 1970s, and has since consistently acted to increase the quality of language, and to in turn contribute to social correctness. Here, the group seek to encourage the renouncement of language that is redundant, wrong, clichéd, and not logical.
