Online Peer Corrective Feedback: Innovation in a Public Speaking Course

Peer corrective feedback has been widely practiced in the teaching and learning of public speaking courses. However, there has been limited research examining peer corrective feedback in an online setting. This study adopted a qualitative descriptive approach using document analysis to investigate the frequencies of peer corrective feedback students’ use in a public speaking course within an eLearning system of a local university.

Besides, the specific public speaking skills and nature of the feedback offered by students were also examined. Twenty-three final year undergraduates video recorded their speeches, uploaded their videos, offered and received online peer feedback in the eLearning platform. All the recorded online peer feedback went through a thorough coding process to identify, arrange, and systemize the peer corrective feedback. The data was examined at three levels of analysis to ensure concrete conclusions were drawn. The results indicated students focused on delivery and voice control skills and paid less attention to language and proficiency skills in the online public speaking course. Besides, students provided relatively more correction-oriented feedback to ensure the accuracy of peers’ speech output. Frequencies and examples of online peer corrective feedback were also accentuated. The paper concluded with a discussion of the educational implications and opportunities stemming from the discovery of the findings.
