abstract = {The program of the XVth International Congress of Linguists in Qu6bec, August 1992, included a panel discussion organized by the Journal of Pragmatics on the theme of'Foundational Questions of Pragmatics'(as dealt with in the Special Issue of the Journal of Pragmatics 17: 5/6). The attendance was larger than expected (around 75 people), and in the discussion following the invited presentations, there was a lively exchange of views about the many important questions raised by the panelists. Since the discussion obviously did not exhaust the different topics connected with the main theme of the meeting, and as there were various requests from the audience to develop this theme further, the Editors, together with the Publisher. discussed the possibility of extending the debate, both topic-wise and in time, that is, by including certain important.},

Three reasons are given by McC. why this book might help in achieving this aim:(1) in many Chinese restaurants, the Chinese menu is different from, and usually larger than the menu in the local vernacular;(2) Chinese names of dishes are often more informative than their translations, and (3)“writing out your order in Chinese characters may assist you in the battle that one often must fight with waiters for treatment befitting a normal human being”(p. 1). The way this aim is to be fulfilled is by setting up as a pedagogical objective2 to teach the reader how to read and look up Chinese characters to be found in Chinese menus. McC. does so by explaining the principles of the Chinese writing system.},

True, a lot of us are interested in logic, but how much interest in the philosophy of religion can one be expected to have in order to read a religionsphilosophische Einfiihrung in die Logik, or as we have to put it somewhat less concisely in English,‘an introduction to logic from the viewpoint of the philosophy of religion’? Moreover, this book is not only in German: that in itself, in an age like ours where the monolingual linguist is not a self-contradictory curiosity any more, could obstruct wider appreciation(cf. Keck and Stubbs (1984: 306) on this problem); also, it is based on a transcription of Heinrich’s lectures at West Berlin’s Freie Universitat in the spring and summer of 1970. And if there ever was a German professor who had the gift of talking, then it is Heinrich. He lectures in a traditional, but not at all old-fashioned way.},

abstract = {We were grieved by the news of the death of Thomas Ballmer, our friend and an advisory editor of this journal. Thomas was one of the most creative linguists in Europe, and he covered a great many aspects of our discipline. His work in the areas of syntax, semantics, pragmatics, as well as in several interdisciplinary interfaces between linguistics and other sciences was a source of inspiration for many of us.
Among the many qualities in Thomas which we will miss, one of the most prominent was his openness of mind. His willingness to always consider new angles and to reconsider so-called established facts and truth was unusual. Five minutes after my first encounter with Thomas in 1974, I (Jens) found myself having moved from a discussion of modern formal semantics, via the medieval doctrine of supposition, on to theoretical psychics.
Also, Thomas’ ambitious endeavor towards a grand synthesis, incorporating linguistic and nonlinguistic elements will be missed as something very much needed in our age of increasing fragmentation of knowledge.
It is a great pity, too, that the work which Thomas and his wife, Waltraud Brennenstuhl, were doing on the lexical semantics of German could not be finished. We can only hope that some way will be found to help Waltraud to bring out the results of their efforts. It is also greatly to be deplored that apparently no space could be found within the German academic community for a man of Thomas Ballmer’s character and creative breadth. We have lost one of the most interesting young linguists in to-day’s Europe. We grieve the loss of a good friend and academic colleague and send our sincere regrets and condolences to Waltraud and the family in Bochum. },

I will attempt to unplug some of these gaps. I contend that Gazdar misinterprets Bernstein's theory as a theory of conversation (whereas it is rather an attempt to explain working class children's lower level of school achievement), and that his use of arguments from logic is misleading, especially where linguists and sociolinguists have already brought more substantial arguments, partly in the same area as Gazdar's claims.},
