Abstract
Makan is a Kinaray-a term which refers to an ethno-bamboo mat product very popular in the sub-rural areas particularly in the Municipality of San Remigio. Makan weaving has been an industry of the locals for manay generations. However, as more and more locals have improved their quality of life, the makan industry has been given less importance and very few manugrara or weaver engaged in the livelihood. It was also observed that the language of manugrara in the weaving process is almost forgotten. The purpose of this study was to discuss the processes involve in weaving of makan and describe the language used by the manugrara in Carawisan, San Remigio, Antique. This study used qualitative research using ethnographic approach that involves participant observation and face to face in-depth interview as methods employing journals, photo documentations and unstructured questionnaire in gathering data. The results of the study showed that there were three processes involve in makan weaving. These were gathering the materials needed, preparing the materials, weaving process, product polishing ready for marketing. It was also found out that makan weaving entails skills and better understanding of the profound Kinaray-a language. From this, the manugrara could produce a quality product since the dialect is very unique to the weavers themselves. It is recommended that the recent generation may be thought with the art of weaving and be instilled with correct valued and passion to preserve the unique Kinaray-a language as well as to promote the cultural and economic value of makan industry.
