In General

This GLOCAL Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement is based on the COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics). The GLOCAL Conferences always uphold the highest standards of publication ethics, while ubiquitously acting against publication malpractices. As such, The GLOCAL Conferences always act ethically with regards to publications, and reject all plagiarism, preserve confidentiality of submitted work, fully guard (against) copyright issues of all published material, publish only original material, and thus fully support the publication process. Here, all articles submitted to The GLOCAL conference proceedings are peer-reviewed. English language is a condition for all submitted abstracts and content in papers, with the exception of necessary data in other languages and forms.

Publication Name

The GLOCAL, The Global Council on Anthropological Linguistics, represents a council of academics, in various institutions globally, working in, or in field pertinent to, the field of Linguistic and Cultural Anthropology. The GLOCAL thus has six sub associations, where each of which focuses on one of six global regions, respectively. These are

  • The CALA  – The Conference on Asian Linguistic Anthropology

  • The COMELA – The Conference on Mediterranean and European Linguistic Anthropology

  • The MEALA – The Middle Eastern Assembly on Linguistic Anthropology

  • The COOLA- The Conference on Oceanian Linguistic Anthropology

  • The SCAALA – The South and Central American Assembly on Linguistic Anthropology

The GLOCAL thus organizes six conferences annually, from each of which, a respective conference proceedings book is published, containing work by presenting authors and their associate authors. The name of each respective conference proceedings book will be The GLOCAL and its conference proceedings event, for example, The GLOCAL CALA 2019, or The GLOCAL COMELA 2020, and so forth.

Editorial Board

The GLOCAL publication editorial board comprises the members of the GLOCAL committee. These scholars all represent expertise in various aspects of global Linguistic Anthropology. All information pertinent to each of these committee members is made available by The GLOCAL on its website. Similarly, all contact information for the Editor in Chief, and for the GLOCAL editing administrator is available on the contact page.

Editorial Roles

  • Predicated on suggestions by both the review report and the editorial board, the Editor can accept, reject, or request modifications to any manuscript.

  • The Editor can reject work without review if the Editor deems the quality insufficient for GLOCAL required standards, or if the content violates ethical requirements, such as plagiarism, fraud, conflicts of interest, bias, or slander.

  • The Editor ensures that manuscripts are reviewed for their intellectual content without regard to sex, gender, race, religion, citizenship, and so forth, of authors

  • Editors’ decisions to accept or reject a paper for publication should be based only on the paper’s importance, originality, and clarity, and the study’s relevance to the remit of the journal.

  • All original studies should be peer reviewed before publication, taking into full account possible bias due to related or conflicting interests.

  • The Editor ensures that information regarding manuscripts is kept confidential

  • The Editor will not use submitted manuscripts for the benefit of the Editor without author written consent.p

  • Studies that challenge previous work published in the journal should be given an especially sympathetic hearing.

  • They must consider and balance the interests of many constituents, including readers, authors, staff, owners, editorial board members, advertisers and the media.

  • When a published paper is subsequently found to contain major flaws, editors must accept responsibility for correcting the record prominently and promptly

Author Responsibilities

  • Authors must ensure that they have written entirely original work.

  • Authors must account for their original research, and must objectively discuss its significance. Similarly, all authors must take responsibility for content.

  • Authors will not submit the same manuscript, or will not publish identically on the same research data, to more than one conference proceedings.

  • Authors will acknowledge all sources used and will cite all appropriate publications.

  • Authorship should be limited to those who have made a significant contribution to the study, either as the main author, or as co-author.

  • The Editor ensures that information regarding manuscripts is kept confidential

  • All authors will have seen and agreed to the submitted version of the manuscript.

  • Authors should be prepared to provide raw data relevant and related to their manuscript for editorial review, and must retain such data for a period of five years after the publication.

  • Authors must clearly disclose sources of financial support.

  • If Authors discover a significant inaccuracy in the manuscript, the Authors must immediately act to remedy this through discussions with the Editor.

  • Authorship should balance intellectual contributions to the design, analysis and development of the study against the data and data collection.

  • Authors should carefully scrutinize the GLOCAL policy prior to developing any written contribution.

  • Authors must be aware that The GLOCAL does not and will not charge fees for any publication. Authors are advised to discuss editing requirements with any third parties. At times, and when clearly announced, The GLOCAL does offer free editing, to selected authors, and will not at any time require remuneration for such work.

  • All manuscript processing and/or publishing of materials in GLOCAL publications shall be clearly announced prior to the acceptance of any papers.

  • Should Authors wish to be included in peer review processes, then The GLOCAL warmly accepts proposals for such voluntary review work.

Plagiarism

The GLOCAL defines plagiarism as exposing work by oneself that derives, past a fundamental unrecognizable unit, from the work of others, whom the author of the plagiarized work neglects or refuses to acknowledge as rightful owners of the original work, and hence without due, legal, and ethical acknowledgement.

The GLOCAL will not under any circumstances accept nor tolerate any form of plagiarism, and will similarly not tolerate any of its collaborators engaging in such practice. As such, GLOCAL adheres to principles throughout these guidelines, that stipulate originality and rigor in research and publishing in Linguistic (and Cultural ) Anthropology.

By submitting to GLOCAL publications for consideration, all authors immediately transfer all authority to The GLOCAL to practice jurisdiction over rightful ownership of work, and as such, authors allow The GLOCAL to exercise policy to act against plagiarism. Authors of these plagiarized works will immediately be contacted to either promptly alter their submissions and any related work, or will be removed from GLOCAL publications at once. Significantly, any libel material and legal repercussions of plagiarism will not be the responsibility of The GLOCAL in any part or in full, and hence the authors of the work submitted to The GLOCAL will be fully responsible for these actions. The GLOCAL holds in very high regard those parties who act against plagiarism, irrespective of the quality of the submitted work, and hence those who continuously seek to develop the standard of their original work. Here, The GLOCAL will work to assist those who attempt to raise the quality of their work through originality.

Peer-review process

The Peer Review Process at GLOCAL not only aims to maintain a high standard of work submitted to and published by GLOCAL, but also to assist GLOCAL to continuously seek ways in which to raise this standard, as a process pf affirmative action research. The GLOCAL defines peer-review as the garnering of critical input on work submitted by authorities in the field relevant to the submitted paper.

  • All GLOCAL conference proceedings and all other publications are subjected to peer-review.

  • The GLOCAL organizes the peer review procedure so as to ensure that multiple reviewers blind-review the submission, and in this way, The GLOCAL editors maximize the objectivity of the review process. To this, , where all GLOCAL reviewers should support their recommendations with concrete arguments.

  • The GLOCAL Editors attempt to most effectively ensure that there is no conflict of interest between the Reviewers and the Authors.

  • Reviewers should maintain full confidentiality with work reviewed.

  • Manuscript reviewers will ensure that authors acknowledge all data sources. Any similarity or overlap between the manuscript and other publications will be immediately brought to the attention of the Editor.

  • Through visiting talks, The GLOCAL provides training to facilitate learning of peer review knowledge. As such, The GLOCAL seeks to continuously encourage increasingly strengthening systems of peer review, and also seeks to limit unethical practices within which peer review is avoided so as to benefit biased intentions in publishing.

  • The GLOCAL encourages all authors and editors to comply with strict peer review requirements, as stipulated in these guidelines and in COPE’s Ethical Guidelines for Peer Reviewers, or in the Association of American University Press’ Best Practices for Peer Review more appropriate.

Publication ethics

  • The GLOCAL, as publisher, will make every effort, and will ensure that all Editors make every effort, to identify and avoid publishing papers that exhibit scholarly misconduct.

  • In the event that The GLOCAL is made aware of any such misconduct, The GLOCAL will immediately act to remedy such misconduct, either through discussion with the Editor or Author, and hence requesting alterations, or by removing the submission from the submission procedure or publication.

  • The GLOCAL has guidelines available for retracting or altering all submissions in the event of misconduct in submissions.

  • The GLOCAL, at times when such misconduct has occurred, or at times when post-publishing alterations are required, practices these post-publication corrections, explanations, apologies, and in the most serious of cases, retractions.

Copyright and access

  • All submissions to The GLOCAL for its proceedings publications shall be copyright owned by The GLOCAL, where the authors will be informed that, should they submit the papers to The GLOCAL, and should the papers be accepted through the review process, the copyright will be transferred to The GLOCAL All copyright notifications are presented on the website, and on each proceedings publication.

  • The conference proceedings publications will be available to readers in PDF form on the GLOCAL website, and on other platforms such as academic.edu. As such, readers may downloas.d the PDF at no cost.

  • For all proceedings publications, there will be no subscription fees, as The GLOCAL endorses a free to publish system, at all time.

Archiving

The GLOCAL proceedings will be archived indefinitely. The GLOCAL platform will also be available indefinitely, with plans to expand to an increasing number of academic institutions. Here, the proceedings will this be available to a general audience indefinitely. The publications will be free to access, download, and distribute, but containing all necessary and conventional copyright, as stipulated in each publication.

Ownership and management

The GLOCAL, The Global Council on Anthropological Linguistics, is a unit at SOAS, University of London. As such, the GLOCAL publishing facility is situated within SOAS.

Publishing schedule

The GLOCAL conferences are held annually in each of six locations globally, each respective to its specific regional focus. As such, the GLOCAL publishes approximately six conference proceedings books per year.
